Mother and Child
One of many little....you know what? I can't for the life of me remember what these things are called! Anyway, they are found all over Italy. Can anyone set my (and my OH and my fathers) minds to rest?!
Frances Mayes writes about them all the time. .. votive somethingsomething, no? No.... argh, I may have to go flick through Under The Tuscan Sun for you.
No wait, she only calls them God spots doesn't she?
My personal research assistant responded with: The general term for the Mother & Child is "Madonna con Bambino." The term I mentioned earlier is "santuario," but it does seem like there's another term for these types of shrines.
She checked with her Field Assistant in Firenze and he responded with: They are called, "tabernacoli" (singular "tabernacolo").
Sorry, I can't remember either. Lovely photo, though.
RispondiEliminaI don't know a technical name that would answer your question, but it is a beautiful "shrine." Lovely colours!

Yes, god spot or shrine.
